Blogging and Social Media: Twitter

with No Comments

Like most other Millennials, I’ve been using Social Media for years. It started when I finished secondary school back in 2005, and at that time my friends introduced me to Bebo in order to keep up with each other online. As the years went by, we upgraded to Facebook; but only recently I have taken an interest into something not new to the world, but new to my online activity: Twitter.

Twitter is a social media platform for users to share their general thoughts, news, information and jokes in 140 characters of text or less. Unlike Facebook, Twitter is completely short message based, which makes global communication cheap and measurable. This has developed as a slang word, “Tweeting”. Profiles are usually public, and so open to anyone in the world to read (unless kept private between groups of friends or businesses).

Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass and launched in July 2006. It was probably intended for the general public to use, but celebrities, journalists, politicians and other public figures have established significant followings on Twitter.

Twitter has also helped Business owners sell their products. They also use it to exchange information: such as finding out what interests their customers, gather general feedback, provide updates and competition entries, and compete with rival businesses. Now that I’ve seen the light, I will continue to update my Twitter activity as and when I can and see where we go from there. I expect this will help bring visitors to my website.
